View looking north

“Batman Walk presents the challenge of an apparently ordinary lane. The task is to create a work that will extend the cultural aspirations of the city by way of impact, presence and quality.”
Batman Walk Design Team

The Batman Walk proposal responds to a short term opportunity for the sunny north-south lane to become a vibrant lunchtime retreat and pocket square within the city. The proposal is for an artistic seat element which serves a newly tenanted artisan baker within the laneway and attracts passers-by through the use of strong visual imagery. Bold use of monochromatic colour, geometry and pattern are applied to the ground plane and folded over solid perimeter edge seating. The geometry of the bench’s form creates a variety of niches and seating options for café visitors and the uniform material finish uses optical device that would change in response to pedestrian motion and perspective. The design uses a simple seating element to draw people into the lane and transform the space.
