View of the Hubbub

"The site has become a disconnected, segmented, underutilised and cluttered environment lacking a common legible identity. It has untapped potential that needs to be recognised and revealed."
Smith and Station Streets Project team

"Our desire is to create a blue thread for the Smith + Station Street by integrating a stormwater narrative throughout the site."

Smith and Station Streets Project team

The Smith and Station Street proposal provides a series of localised design solutions for areas within the streets requiring respite and greening.

The design consists of several discrete elements which join together to create a previously unrecognised ‘green thread’. The ‘green thread’ combines a water sensitive urban design ‘blue thread’ with the reintroduction of plant communities which characterised the Parramatta region prior to European settlement.

The elements contained within the thread incorporate both major transformative elements and those which are more immediately achievable. A major transformation is the relocation of the bus interchange to allow the site to be transformed into a new park called ‘the Hill’. A proposed intermediate transformation is a steeped green wall and rain gardens along the railway edge in Station Street called ‘the urban wetland’. Small scale interventions include small pocket arbours along Smith Street called ‘the hubbub’.
